Top Asked Questions

What is trademark renewal?

Trademark renewal is the process of extending the protection of a registered trademark by filing renewal applications before expiration.

Why is trademark renewal important?

If the required filings are not made on time, the USPTO cancels the registration and you lose the legal protections that come with it.

How often should a trademark be renewed?

For a U.S. registration, a Declaration of Use is due between the 5th and 6th year after registration, then a combined renewal between the 9th and 10th year, and every 10 years after that.

Can Trademark Inn handle international trademark renewals?

Yes. We can manage renewals for registrations in other jurisdictions, including the UK, EU and Canada, as well as international registrations through WIPO.

What happens if a renewal is missed?

The USPTO allows a 6-month grace period with an additional fee. If nothing is filed by the end of it, the registration is cancelled and a new application is needed.
